White vinegar

low hazard

Also: acetic acid 5%, distilled vinegar

CleaningFoodPreserveHygiene

The den’s default mild acid: descaler, rinse, pickle brine backbone, and the bottle you grab for an alkali splash on a COUNTER (not on skin). It is not a hospital disinfectant, and it is a chlorine-gas recipe if it meets bleach.

Shelf life
Indefinite
Container
Original plastic is fine; glass for long-term
Grade
5% distilled white for cleaning and most pickles. Cleaning vinegar is often 6–30% — not for food, harder on lungs.

What it does

  • ▸Mineral scale and hard-water film
  • ▸Pickling (tested recipes)
  • ▸Deodorizing drains and boards
  • ▸Neutralizing alkali spills on surfaces

Store

  • ▸Away from bleach and pool shock. Opposite side of the room is not too far.

Hazards

  • ▸Bleach + vinegar = chlorine gas. This pairing hospitalizes people every year.
  • ▸Cleaning vinegar at 20–30% is a different beast — goggles, ventilation.

Never mix

Gear

Ventilation for hot vinegar fumes

In the field

Shower head: bag of 5% vinegar tied over the head, sit 1 hour, rinse. Arizona calcium will come off in flakes.

Arizona note

Your faucets will thank you. Store a gallon in the bath and a gallon in the kitchen — never next to the bleach.

Source

Grocery distilled white 5%. If the label says 30%, it is not salad vinegar.
