The most useful powder in the den. It cleans, deodorizes, leavens, calms acid indigestion, and smothers small grease or electrical-adjacent fires as a dry dump.

What it does

  • ▸Gentle abrasive cleaner and refrigerator deodorizer
  • ▸Baking and some food-preservation chemistry
  • ▸Paste for insect bites and mild skin itch
  • ▸Neutralizes acid spills (vinegar, citric, battery acid splash — after PPE)
  • ▸Dry-powder smother for a small pan fire

Store

  • ▸It cakes if humid. Desiccant in the bulk bucket.
  • ▸Do not store with acids — they spend each other.

Hazards

  • ▸Not a substitute for a rated fire extinguisher on a working fire.
  • ▸High-sodium; not a daily antacid habit.

Never mix

In the field

Spill kit: box of bicarb for acids, bottle of vinegar for alkali spills. Keep both on the chemical shelf — used on the spill, not mixed into one bottle.

Arizona note

Fine in heat. Monsoon humidity cakes it; break up and redry if needed.
