PreserveFoodHygiene

A hungry desiccant and a food-safe firming salt when the grade is right. In the den it keeps dry stores dry and can crisp pickles. It also releases heat when it hits water — useful, and a burn hazard.

Shelf life
Indefinite if sealed. It pulls water out of the air and will turn into brine.
Container
True airtight. Glass or HDPE with a good gasket.
Grade
Food grade for any food use (pickle crisp, cheese). Ice-melt grade is not food.

What it does

  • ▸Reusable-style moisture control in sealed cabinets (replace when liquid)
  • ▸Pickle crisp / some cheese making (food grade only)
  • ▸Emergency ice melt on walkways (not plant-friendly in quantity)

Store

  • ▸If the bag goes slack and wet, it has already worked — reseal leftovers immediately.
  • ▸Keep off bare metal; brine is corrosive.

Hazards

  • ▸Exothermic when mixed with water — can splash-burn.
  • ▸Irritates skin and eyes. Not table salt.

Never mix

No listed pairing among the den compounds.

Gear

Gloves · Goggles when mixing into water

In the field

Do not use ice-melt bags in food. The label will say sodium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, or a blend — plus corrosion inhibitors you do not want to eat.

Arizona note

The best cheap cabinet desiccant in monsoon season. Recharge is not practical at home once it brines; keep spare sealed pails.

Source

Food-grade from brewing/cheese suppliers. Hardware ice melt only for walkways.
