Activated charcoal

low hazard

Also: activated carbon, AC

WaterFirst aidHygiene

A sponge for toxins, odors, and many dissolved chemicals. It does not kill germs — it binds them and some poisons so they can be filtered or passed.

Shelf life
Indefinite if sealed dry
Container
Airtight jar or mylar, away from odors
Grade
USP / food / water-filter grade

What it does

  • ▸Binds many ingested toxins in a medical setting (use only as directed by poison control or a clinician)
  • ▸Polishes taste and odor from stored water when used in a filter bed
  • ▸Controls odor in latrines, refrigerators, and closed rooms

Store

  • ▸Keep bone-dry. Moisture and nearby smells use up adsorption sites.
  • ▸Never store next to bleach, solvents, camphor, or essential oils.
  • ▸Portion into use-size jars so the bulk supply stays sealed.

Hazards

  • ▸Fine dust is an inhalation irritant — do not breathe the cloud when pouring.
  • ▸Not a treatment for every poison (alcohol, metals, acids, and alkalis often do not bind).
  • ▸Can interfere with oral medicines if taken at the same time.

Never mix

Gear

Dust mask when pouring · Gloves

In the field

For water: use as a filter stage after sediment and before or after disinfection — charcoal does not disinfect.

If someone may have ingested a poison, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the U.S.) before giving anything.

Arizona note

Arizona heat is fine. Humidity after monsoon storms is the enemy — add a desiccant packet.

Pharmacy, aquarium/filter suppliers, or bulk USP powder. Avoid barbecue charcoal briquettes (additives).
